Scheduled Maintenance and Upgrades:
Blackboard - 7:00am - 7:10pm Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 -
The Kettering University Blackboard system will be down for 10 minutes on August 23rd for routine maintenance. Users should plan to log off of the system prior to 7 a.m.
E-mail and calendar System - 6:00am - 8:00am July 3rd -
The maintenance and updates on our Mass Storage System planned for today has been rescheduled. They will now be completed 6:00-8:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 3, 2008. This will affect our Email system which will be shut down at 6:00 A.M. July 3 with an expected return to service within 2 hours.
Email will be unavailable during this time. If you are an Outlook user please logout of Outlook by 6:00 A.M. on July 3.
Blackboard - 12:01am - 12:00pm July 5 -
The Kettering University Blackboard system will be down from 12:01 a.m., July 5 until 12 p.m. the same day. The downtime is to allow for routine maintenance of the entire system. Users should plan on logging off before 12:01 a.m., July 5 and not expect to have access to the system until after 12 p.m. that day.
Windows Network Storage Enhancement - 12:01am July 5 - 12:01am July 6 -
No pain, no gain!
There will be Big Gains when IT increases faculty and staff storage on the Windows system from 160 Gigabytes to 2,500 Gigabytes (or 2.5 Terabytes), which will increase individual faculty and staff storage quotas from 50 Megabytes to 5000 Megabytes or 5 Gigabytes on home directories (Your “N” Drive). The change will be effective July 7, but before the big gain comes a little pain – faculty and staff storage will be unavailable from 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 5 to 12:01 a.m. Sunday, July 6 for the switch over. The upgrade, phase one of a comprehensive plan, is scheduled during Zero Section to minimize the pain.
What do you have to do? To ensure a smooth transition to the new increased storage area, be sure to shut down your computer or log off before you leave for the Fourth of July weekend. This will allow seamless access to the new larger storage space when you start your computer again. If you forget to do this before the holiday, you will just need to log off then log back on to your computer after the switch to access the new storage location.
After the switch the, “N” drive - home directories, the “M” and “O” drives – share drives, will point to the new storage server “KBOD”. We plan to eventually move the balance of the data on the “Staff” server over to this larger system.
In addition to more space, there will be a new user file recovery feature available. So, if you have ever deleted a file by accident or saved changes to the wrong file, you will be able to undo your mistake. The new system will allow you to restore to a previous copy of the file in seconds. Information on how to use this recovery feature can be found under the help sheet section of the IT web page (www.kettering.edu/it).
E-mail and Calendar System
May 20, 2008 Update -
We are continuously working with Sun Support to resolve outstanding issues related to calendar functionality. Many issues will be addressed with a new version of the Outlook Connector which is currently being tested and should be available shortly. Most other issues
have been addressed with patches, workarounds, or currently have fixes that will be applied during the next zero section.
The Calendar system is currently available but the following issues may impact your usage of the calendar.
The Calendar Server has been patched and been stable for some time. While we have made many improvements there are some
bugs and issues that we are working to resolve. These issues include but are not limited to:
-
Some users have been experiencing problems in Outlook when trying to subscribe to other users calendars
--We have implemented a workaround for this issue.
-
Some users have reported that they receive an error message in webmail when trying to modify permissions to their calendar or grant
new users permissions or subscribe to other calendars
--We have implemented a work around for this.
-
Problems with users' Free/Busy permissions in Outlook and Comm. Express
--This issue should be resolved at this time.
-
Events becoming corrupt and causing views to not display in Communications Express
--This issue should be resolved at this time.
-
Outlook users cannot view more then one month of Free/Busy information
--You can now view 90 days worth of Free/Busy info via Outlook
-
Problems deleting/modifying recurring events via Outlook and Comm. Express
--This issue should be resolved at this time.
IT is also working on the E-mail and Webmail Servers to fix and improve some of the following issues:
-
Slow response from e-mail clients (Thunderbird, Pine, or Outlook) when checking/deleting e-mail during peak hours
--After many performance changes to the system, this issue appears to be resolved.
-
Various JavaScript Error messages in Communication Express
--Many of theses errors have been fixed, we are waiting to put others in during zero section.
-
"Session Timed Out. Log in again" popup message in Comm. Express. Currently the Mail tab will timeout after two hours of being Idle. When this occured some users had to close their browser or clear cache in order to log back in.
--We have modified the JavaScript for this and you should now be properly redirected to the login page if your Session Times Out.
-
Problems with Webmail spell check incorrectly formatting messages, running words together. Update: This appears to have been resolved except when using older versions of Firefox (1.0.8 and below), and/or using any version of Firefox and pasting in certain content into a messages and sending (and not necessarily using the spell check feature).
--A possible fix for the spell check problem has been implemented (including issues with old versions of Firefox).
-
Corporate Directory (address book) sorts by first name, instead of last name. Also causes problems with Outlook in the way it is displayed when trying to select the correct e-mail address.
--We are currently testing a new version of the Sun Outlook Connector which should resolve this issue.
-
Problems with "Reply" or "Reply-All" in Communications Express incorrectly
formatting the original message, adding spaces, line breaks, and running words together.
This occurs when the original message was sent via Outlook and replied to in Communications Express.
--A code change was made which seems to have improved this issue. There is also a workaround (albeit temporary) is to use "Forward" instead of "Reply". Permanent fixes are planned to be implemented during zero section.
-
When using the Safari web browser, the first line of the E-mail message becomes the last line.
--A fix was made for this issue and the line ordering is correct now, there is still a formatting issue when viewed with other browsers.
-
When using the Printable view of an e-mail, the e-mail is not always formatted properly. The message text gets squashed into a column on the left hand side of the page.
--A fix for this has been applied and should now be working correctly in most cases.
-
In Outlook 2007, when marking a block of messages as read and then clicking
Send and Receive (or waiting for Outlook to check for new messages), the messages just marked as read as
unmarked and are listed as unread.
--A new version of the Outlook Connector is currently being tested which will resolve this issue.
-
In Communications Express when viewing a messages and pressing delete, the next message displayed is the next message +1 listed and not the next message.
--A fix has been put in place on Dec 07, 2007 that should resolve this issue.
- A 5120kb attachment size limit imposed by a system default in Comm. Express.
- Subscribing to a shared calendar should be done using the shared folders approach rather than using the 'Open a shared calendar' approach available in the calendar menu.
- Outlook users may be prompted with a security alert regarding certificates.
--For information on how to address the issue, a helpsheet is available.

We are currently experiencing a problem with the Barracuda Spam Firewall. We are working with Barracuda Networks support to resolve the issue. Users are currently having difficulty sending e-mail. We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this issue.
There is a workaround help sheet for Outlook users that use the Outlook Connector, located here: Outlook Connector Change

Users who wish to use a web browser to connect with the new email system should point the browser at https://webmail.kettering.edu.
Outlook Users
The Sun Connector for Outlook is now being pushed out to all faculty and staff PC's in the Kettering Domain. This means that you no longer need to be an Administrator on you PC in order to install the Connector.
For IT Staff, if a PC does not have the connector, log in as an administrator and Run the following: Connector Installer.
Staff Updated Connector - This connector will convert a staff users profile once the Connector is installed, this does not require Administrator rights.
Faculty Updated Connector - This connector will convert a faculty users profile once the Connector is installed, this does not require Administrator rights.
Click here to download documentation on how to install the connector.
For more information on how to use the connector with Outlook go to Sun Outlook connecter User Guide.
For technical problems related to the new email system, please call our Helpdesk at ext. 8324 internally and 1-810-237-8324 from outside the campus.
